Actors! Why Your Ring Light Is Not Cutting it for Self-Tape Auditions

You’ve seen them everywhere, from YouTube beauty influencers to TikTok stars. Ring lights have become a popular choice for lighting up selfies and videos. But when it comes to self-tape auditions, a ring light might not be the best option. So let's dive into why ring lights can be less than ideal for self-tape auditions and my next post will be what you can do to achieve a more flattering light.

Why a Ring Light is NOT Ideal for Self-Tape Auditions

Self tapes require more distance between you and the light
The Distance

While ring lights can be great for up-close and even lighting, they are not the best choice for self-tape auditions, which are typically shot from your chest up (a medium shot). At this distance, a ring light creates a harsh light, which can create shadows and make your skin look uneven.

The Need for Diffusion

One of the biggest problems with ring lights is that they are too harsh. To combat this, you need to use a diffuser. A diffuser is a material that softens the light, making it more gentle, even, and flattering. Think about how the light from a bare bulb compares to how that light feels when coming through a lampshade. Or how white curtains soften harsh sunlight coming through the window. You can purchase diffusers online or make your own using a piece of white fabric.

Two is Better Than One

Often people shoot with a single ring light, and when it comes to lighting for self-tape auditions, two lights are better than one. Using two soft light sources will create a more even and flattering light that will highlight your best features. Don’t go out and buy a second ring light yet! More on this in a future blog post.

Experiment with Angles: Don’t be afraid to experiment with different light angles until you find what works best for you. Try placing the light higher or lower, or try moving it to the side.
